: a ketose sugar C5H10O5 of the pentose class that is formed from xylose by epimerization and from d-arabitol by bacterial oxidation, that like ribulose plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism, and that is found in the urine in cases of pentosuria; threo-pentulose
